Privacy Policy
Liner is a local music player. It plays the audio that is already on your device. We do not run accounts, we do not show ads, and we do not track you or sell data. This page explains exactly what the app does and does not do with your information.
The short version
- No account or sign-up. The app works fully offline.
- No ads, no analytics, no advertising IDs, no third-party trackers.
- Your music and library stay on your device.
- The only network use is optional: looking up lyrics and cover art by song title and artist.
01 Information we collect
Liner does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to us. We have no servers, no database of users, and no way to identify you. We never see your library, your listening habits, or any usage data.
The app accesses the following only on your device:
- Audio files & their metadata — song title, artist, album, duration, and embedded artwork, read from your device's media storage so the app can build your library and play music.
- App settings — your theme, lyric, and playback preferences, saved locally on the device.
- A local cache — lyrics and cover-art images fetched online are saved on your device so they're available offline and don't need to be fetched again.
None of this information leaves your device except as described in the next section.
02 Network use & third parties
Optional · can be turned offTo show synced lyrics and missing album art, Liner can look them up online. When this is enabled, the app sends a search query containing the song title and artist name (and sometimes album and track duration) to public music-metadata providers. No personal identifiers, accounts, or device IDs are attached to these requests.
Lyrics may be requested from:
- LRCLIB, Musixmatch, Kugou, QQ Music, Kuwo, Migu, and Megalobiz
Cover art may be requested from:
- Apple iTunes, Deezer, MusicBrainz / Cover Art Archive, QQ Music, Genius, Kugou, and Kuwo
These are independent third-party services with their own privacy practices. Your network request (including your IP address, as with any internet request) is handled by them under their own policies. Liner has no affiliation with or control over these providers.
You can disable all online look-ups in Settings → Lyrics → Fetch lyrics online. With it off, the app makes no network requests and works entirely offline.
03 Permissions we request
- Music & audio (READ_MEDIA_AUDIO / storage) — to find and play the audio files on your device. This is the core function of the app.
- Notifications — to show playback controls (play, pause, skip) in the notification shade and on the lock screen.
- Internet & network state — used only for the optional lyrics and cover-art look-ups described above.
- Foreground service — to keep music playing while the app is in the background.
Liner does not request access to your contacts, location, camera, microphone, or any other sensitive data.
04 Writing to your files
If you choose to embed lyrics (manually, or via the optional auto-embed setting), Liner writes those lyrics into the metadata tags of the relevant audio file on your device. This happens locally, only for files you act on, and only at your direction.
05 Data storage & security
All app data — your settings and the lyrics/artwork cache — is stored locally on your device in the app's private storage. Because nothing is sent to or held by us, there is no remote copy of your data to breach. Uninstalling the app removes this data. You can also clear the lyric cache at any time in Settings → Lyrics → Clear lyric cache.
06 Children's privacy
Liner does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children. The app contains no ads and no data collection.
07 Changes to this policy
If the app's behavior changes, this policy will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will change. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect in a released version.
